So I was scrummaging around my old files on my hard drive a few days ago (to try and clean up some of the mess I've made over the years!) and I came across some works in progress that I had started around Jan 2014 and holy poop did they ever open up my eyes! I thought I'd share with you guys one of those eye sores in hopes of motivating you to stick to your goals no matter how sucky you think you are at the moment, because you really never know how much you could improve in just a years worth of hard work and dedication! It was just a tad difficult for me to decide whether or not I wanted to share this with you but I realized it could really inspire some people and my pride is much much less important than giving some of you guys a motivational boost! So here you go! Just be kind, lol.
So this was my attempt at a female sorceress type character back in January 2014. As you can see I had a pretty poor understanding of anatomy (especially in the face). I actually remember being incredibly discouraged at this point in my development and was looking for plan B career choices that were "safer" and completely non art-related. Nothing seemed to be sticking, and those "A-HA!" moments - where things just seemed to make sense - were very few and far between. But, of course, I gave my head a little shake and decided to just go at it a lot harder, do a lot more studies and observe my surroundings a lot more consciously and carefully. I really had nothing to lose and everything to gain. Before I knew it, those "A-HA!" moments were getting more and more frequent, and just a year later I was able to squeeze out this:
...My second attempt at a female sorceress type character. Although there is a lot to improve on still (as there always will be), I finally feel as though I'm at a place where there is no doubt that I can actually make a career out of creating art. That fear we all have when we finally decide to attempt at accomplishing our goals has finally almost completely disappeared for me. And seeing how much I feel as though I've improved over just this past year makes me excited to see how much I will have improved by the end 2015!
I suppose it's just a matter of remembering that nothing worth while ever comes easy in life, unless of course you're incredibly lucky! But for the vast majority of us, there's a lot of hard work that stands in the way of us and our goals. And that hard work does not have to feel like a burden if you are able to change your mindset to think the right things. I almost prefer things to be difficult along the way, as it's really in the learning and the growing that you develop the right attitude and mindset to be able to get through the hardships and the struggles. The most important thing is to be able to stay positive and to be able to pick yourself back up whenever you feel discouraged - as cliche as that sounds it really is the truth!
Anywho, I will likely be sharing some more of my older crap in the near future as I find more stuff whilst scrummaging through my hard drive. I hope I was able to inspire some of you with this post!
Keep striving for awesomeness!
